Torsha Sarkar had to be content with the third position in the mega final of the musical reality TV show Indian Idol IV on Sony TV on Sunday while the 23-year-old Sourabhee Debbarma made history becoming the first female winner of the total four seasons of the prestigious Indian Idol show. Sourabhee, who hails from Agartala, beat fellow finalists Torsha Sarkar and Kapil Thapa to win the coveted
crown. Kapil Thapa from Dehradun finished second.
Sourabhee,
who held an edge over her fellow contestants throughout the reality
show, won a contract of Rs. 1 crore with Sony Music with this win.
The north-east "rock star" won the coveted prize of a music contract of Rs10 million with Sony TV and a SUV from Tata. The result was based on public voting.
Sourabhee has no professional training in music. Both her parents are government employees.
Bollywood stars John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh were
also on the stage as part of the grand finale that was marked with
songs and anecdotes.
Immediate past winner Prashant Tamang as well as Indian Idol contestants were also present.

Akhtar, Anu Malik, Kailash Kher and Sonali Bendre, too were present to

angvani reminds, Torsha admits "Yes, I am from BGP" (23.01.2009)
"Lata Mangeshkar of Bhagalpur", Torsha Sarkar remembered
her birthplace and votes from Bhagalpur ensured her entry into safe Seven category of Indian Idol.
Notably,
admission of the fact by her followed an angvani article reminding her
of her birthplace Bhagalpur, which she never named in the show till
our article on 20th October (below) appeared. That article focussed on
the disappointment caused among her innocent
supporters in Bhagalpur, who had gone gaga over just her entry into the
show considering her from their city, after she introduced her self
from Asansol in West Bengal instead of Bhagalpur.
Torsha remembers Bhagalpur (27.10.2008)
At last, she remembered and got emotional while expressing her feeling on how did
she miss the Durga Puja this year at Manik Sarkar Chowk, where she used to
visit every year without fail.
She could not make this year because of her
selection into top thirty of famous reality show Indian Idol on Sony TV.
During the show on Saturday, Torsha appeared very emotional
and dedicated a song to her grand mother, who stays in Bhagalpur. “I miss my
grandmother a lot and wish to dedicate a song to her, who stays in Bhagalpur of
Bihar,” said emotional Torsha.
Not only this, she went on and at a moment it seemed that she
was not going to leave anything to tell the audiences about Bhagalpur, where
she was born and learnt basics of music. She also said that she could not go to
Bhagalpur this year due to her selection but she missed the cultural programme,
in which she used to be a star attraction. In fact, she got popular as Lata
Mangeshkar of Bhagalpur by a famous city doctor for her extraordinary performance
in a cultural programme held every year at Manik Sarkar Durga Mandir.
She even mentioned that got wide applause from audience in
return. Justifying her magical voice she has got, she was awarded the best singer
for that episode.
angvani had strongly
objected to her introduction as a candidate from West Bengal in her profile on
official website of Indian Idol and also in the programme where she had
introduced herself from Asansol in West Bengal.
This very repeated act of ignorance of her about her
birthplace had irked many of Bhagalpurites, who put posters and banners
appealing votes for her at every chowk in the city. Many of them had even planned to not to vote
for her on the ground of her belongingness to the city.
angvani View:
Torsha, angvani assures you of all possible support. Even
earlier, angvani was not against you. It just wanted that the city gets its due
recognition. It was very painful for the city residents, who had put up posters
and banners at several places in an overnight in your support just because you
belong to this place, to digest your repeated act of ignorance about your birth
place.
Now, everything is right on the track. And angvani also
appeals to all its readers to vote for a Bhagalpurite and make her sit on the
top of the musical world.
Best of luck Torsha!!!
Judges’ comment on
her voice:
1st Song –Baiyaan na dharo
JAVED AKHTAR - Your voice is exceptional-it's beautiful and
tangible. We can see it.
SONALI BENDRE - Your voice is so wonderful-I think the
audience must never lose out on this voice
KAILASH KHER - I completely disagree with what Annu has to
say. I'm very impressed.
ANU MALIK - You concentrated so much on the harkats,
you went off key.
2nd Song – Chura liya hai tumne ….
JAVED AKHTAR – There is magic in your voice.
SONALI BENDRE - Your
voice is like a gooey brownie with vanilla ice cream.
KAILASH KHER - I can
appreciate your dedication, your sincerity.
ANU MALIK - You are a find-you have already become an Indian
Idol today.
Torsha, a'int you from BGP ? (Dated 20.10.2008)
Although
Bhagalpuri have gone gaga over the selection of Torsha Sarkar from
the city into top thirty of a famous reality show Indian Idol on Sony
TV, the
sense of their happiness and pride seems to be gradually disappearing
with Torsha's repeated act of ignorance about Bhagalpur, the place
where she was born. Some sections
of the city residents have made up their mind to not to vote for her on
the ground of her being from Bhagalpur.
They are angered at her introduction as herself a girl from West Bengal contrary to the fact that she belongs to Bhagalpur.
Their
anguish and logic behind their decision to not to vote for her are finding many
takers among those, who in a way had started a sort of campaign in her favour. “No
doubt, she sings well, her voice is magical, tell me one example where she had
introduced herself as a girl from Bhagalpur, asks Mayank.
He
says that he would vote for her because she has got really a good voice but not
on the ground of her belongingness to Bhagalpur.
Several
others in Bhagalpur think on same line and this has become hot topic for
discussion at tea stalls. “Even on official website of Indian idol, she has not
mentioned even a single word about Bhagalpur and has introduced herself as a
girl from Asansol (West Bengal). She could have easily described Bhagalpur as
her native city,” asks Saurabh, a city resident.
Torsha
Sarkar belongs to Manik Sarkar Colony of the city and her parents work in a PSU
at Kulti in Bardhman district of West Bengal. She studied in Asansol and
currently doing graduation in Bangalore.
Another youth from city, Vivek tries to find out the possibility of negative voting in the show. He has even written on the scrap book of Sony TV's official website on Indian Idol asking her the reason behind not naming city as her birth place.
Vivek adds more by saying that he was surprised to find banners and posters in the city urging the residents to vote for her. And there only through those posters and banners he knew about Torsha's success.I also felt elated then but now I feel it was in vain and not needed.
angvani view :
This is really saddening a girl, who belong to Bhagalpur, introduces
herself from Asansol in her profile on official website of the reality show. To
top it all, even Torsha introduced herself during the show as herself from West
Bengal.
We
don’t understand what prevents her taking name of Bhagalpur as her native city.
This is the saddest part of the story that
when almost all Bhagalpurites are ready to help her by voting in her favour,
the girl is not ready to admit the truth that she is from Bhagalpur. Even
angvani had tried to contact her, but in vain.
angvani
does not say anything to its readers. It simply want to convey the message that
it would have been better and would have added a feather in the cap of the city
had she named herself from Bhagalpur.
angvani
does not intend to influence its readers to vote for or against her but it
wants this message to be communicated to her and her family members that birthplace
should never be neglected even if it is backward or under developed.

Apart from being emotional and disappointed about Torsha's ignorance of the city (even i got very disappointed), if we think from Torsha's point of view, it would tough for her to assosiate herself to Bhagalpur when she has stayed always in Asansol(Burdwaan). All through her growing years she has stayed in Asansol and thats the only reason if she feel more to be of that city.
Lets be more mature, be more practical and root for a splendid voice, a charming personality and by a matter of luck we can even assosiate her to be from our city.

It really sad to discover this fact, place like our get a chance to boost of something only once in a blue moon, and this time when we got chance, the protagonist herself decided to play the spoilsport. Torsha has even performed in Bhagalpur during last year's durga puja, and Dr. Shantanu Ghosh (noted medical practitioner) was so much pleased about her performance that he went on to the stage to term her "Bhagalpur's Lata Mangeshkar". Question is Does this Lata Mangeshkar accept herself to be from Bhagalpur.
I feel that since she has never stayed here, so she cant assosiate herself with city.
WE ALWAYS SUPPORT U
