With Bihar reeling under severe cold conditions, the state human resource
development (HRD) department on Tuesday ordered closure of all government schools in the state till January 15. The Patna administration in a separate directive issued on Tuesday ordered
closure of all government and private schools of the district till January 16.
“An order in this regard was issued by the district magistrate,” Patna district
PRO Surendra Pandey said. With January 17 being Sunday, school here would
re-open from Monday only.
Earlier, most of the city schools were
scheduled for January 4 opening after the winter break but severe cold
conditions forced the district administration to announce closure of schools
earlier also.
Meanwhile, the Met office on Tuesday that two places in
Bihar — Chhapra and Dehri-on-Sone — could be said to be under the grip of cold
wave. The minimum temperature in these two places was 6ºC below the normal.
While the minimum temperature was 5.7ºC in Chhapra, it was 6.2ºC at
Dehri-on-Sone.
Gaya was the coldest with minimum temperature hovering at
5.6ºC, while the minimum temperature levels in Patna, Purnia and Bhagalpur were
7.4ºC, 7ºC and 9ºC respectively. None of these four places, however, fit the
bill for being declared to be under the grip of cold wave as minimum temperature
level was just 3 to 4ºC below the normal.
According to norms, a place is
said to be under the grip of cold wave only if the minimum temperature level is
5ºC or more below the normal.
Technicalities notwithstanding, residents
in Bihar are finding it tough to cope with severe cold conditions as the sky in
most parts of the state is overcast and the maximum temperature levels too have
come down considerably below the normal.
The maximum temperature of
Patna on Tuesday was 14.9ºC, 9ºC below the normal. It was 7ºC, 8ºC and 9ºC below
the normal at Gaya, Bhagalpur and Purnia respectively. Maximum temperature
levels at these three places were 16.8ºC, 15.6ºC and 13.8ºC respectively.
“The condition would remain more or less the same on Wednesday and some
respite is expected on Thursday onwards as the cloud cover is likely to give way
to clear sky from that day,” Met director Animesh Chandra told the TOI.
